Cognitive therapy is given at many different levels, from quite simplistic & general to very insightful & profound. At the Centrumpraktijk, you are helped to gain really deep insight into the thought patterns & beliefs that are holding you back, helping you to understand why you feel & behave in a certain way.

You become aware of what causes your negativity, tension, fear & insecurity and you begin to understand why you do - or don't do - something. You are then helped to intelligently correct your thought patterns & beliefs and begin to recognize & step by step change them in your daily (working) life.

In this way the underlying causes of many of your problems not only become visible, but also manageable and you can effectively and practically deal with them. You will tackle the undermining, exaggerated, dramatic, responsible and/or critical ways of thinking and through this negativity, tensions, fears & insecurities etc. will lose their grip on you.

What you have learned and experienced in your life has shaped your way of thinking over time. How you view yourself, other people and the world has become a package of your experiences, thoughts and feelings. Many of these thoughts and images help you assess situations and people well and deal with them well - it gives you balance.

Throughout the day thoughts go through your mind, and sometimes you are aware of what you are thinking, but often you are not. You usually think very ordinary neutral, practical or nice thoughts, but there are also thoughts where you feel something unpleasant, both emotionally and physically. And that often triggers other thoughts, which in turn trigger more unpleasant feelings - causing you to lose your balance again and again.

When you lose your balance and do not deal with yourself, other people and/or situations in a good way, it is necessary to investigate what causes this. Especially when you lose your balance in situations where it is not really necessary, when you experience strong feelings & react strongly or when you remain too passive or take yourself away too much, it is necessary to look at what you actually (unconsciously) think & believe that makes you feel & behave the way you do.

Undermining beliefs


You will be helped in the sessions to become aware of these undermining thoughts & beliefs so that you can begin to correct them. Some of these are quite easy to visualize & fairly easy to change and if you start working with them, you soon find that it saves a lot of problems & headaches. You get a better grip on yourself, your feelings & your behavior and your balance becomes stronger.

Unfortunately, most of us also have some deep beliefs that are a lot harder to change. Often this is because they have been nurtured in childhood and/or because there is a strong experience & emotional charge attached to them, such as fear, guilt, sadness, shame or inferiority. When you learn to address these beliefs, the old negative feelings & barriers are dissolved & you finally gain real control over your life.
