Dealing with anxiety


When there is real trouble you must be tense. When there is real danger you should be afraid. This makes you pay extra attention and make sure you survive. But you can also exaggerate dangers, and in addition to real dangers, you can become afraid of dangers you imagine in your mind.

As a result, you may think of something scary and become afraid as a result - without there being a whole lot going on at the time or anything really threatening happening. Fearful ideas, memories & representations can seem lifelike and the feelings you experience in the process can be very strong. So lifelike and so strong that you believe it is really going on right now - and you react as if your life is really threatened.

So you may become afraid of the things you think (see) and fear will happen - even though you are safe at that moment and little is actually going on. It may be that you remember something from the past or think of something you have seen or read and become frightened as a result. Or that your imagination runs away with you and you scare yourself with all kinds of (realistic-looking) fearful images.

Trouble with fear, anxiety & panic


But because it feels so real, you may be reacting to your fear before you've even checked to see if you're really threatened. This is usually because you haven't learned to deal with fear properly, often in combination with fearful experiences in the past, which has caused you to react so violently. Because fear can be so strong, you may have come to believe your fear far too blindly and/or ignore, suppress or fight your feelings - and that ultimately doesn't work.

It is necessary to learn to examine what your fear is trying to warn you about and to learn to use these warnings in a good way. Dealing with anxiety properly means understanding what your anxiety is warning you about and learning to distinguish between them. But because fear & panic feel so intense, it can be very difficult to do this on your own.

After all, in acute danger, your mind can be temporarily put out of action by your survival instinct. Because when you are in real danger, you have to react and get yourself to safety. As a result, you don't waste time thinking, but react immediately. Your instinct causes you to do at that moment what you must do to survive - whether your life is really at stake or not.... .

When you are in real danger, you have to react and get yourself to safety. But when you are constantly afraid that something terrible will happen (someday) or you are afraid of something you think (see), it is difficult to stay balanced. You then react instinctively every time in an attempt to get yourself to safety, while there is no real threat at that moment.

Your instinctive reactions can be very convincing and make you believe that you are really in mortal danger. But it is very difficult to keep your balance when you scare yourself with exaggerations and things that are not really happening at that moment - or ignore or trivialize real threats.
