Overworked & overstrained


You get overworked or overstrained when you are (unknowingly) too long or under too much pressure. Because no matter how strong you may be, if you just keep going, the tension can continue to increase and at some point it will become too much for you. And that can be a pretty disillusioning experience, because if you become overworked, you can become quite mentally, physically and emotionally upset and get (unexpectedly) confronted with your own limits and vulnerability.

If you become or are overstrained, the smallest things can get to you and even a little bit of pressure can cause strong physical, emotional and/or mental reactions. The consequences of being stressed out can be great and that can be very confronting and difficult to understand - and even more difficult to deal with without good help. But if you do not manage to get a grip on the symptoms of being overworked, you can continue to suffer from them for much longer than necessary.

Overstrained & stressed-out


Being overstrained can force you to pause or take a step back - whether you want to or not & whether it suits you or not. That is why it is important to quickly deal with the complaints of being overworked and/or stressed-out, so that the consequences of being overstrained for your own health and for your work & environment do not become even greater. Because you will have to become aware of the causes of being overworked & overstrained, so that you can learn to overcome & tackle them.

Suppressing or numbing the problems & complaints with alcohol or medication and/or sitting at home for a while does not help you to solve the causes of being overstrained & stressed-out. And it certainly does not help to tackle them effectively and get better, not in terms of health & not in your work or functioning. By developing greater insight, you can not only tackle the complaints, but you will ultimately also become wiser and you can emerge stronger from this difficult period.

Causes of overexertion & overload


Engagement, responsibility, loyalty & commitment etc. can make you demand a lot from yourself. Just like performance pressure, fear of failure, perfectionism & negativity etc. can make you experience a lot of pressure and create overexertion or an overload. If you don't know how to deal with this or have the tendency to go on endlessly, the pressure can (unwittingly) increase further and further - making you (unwittingly) less clear-headed, which in turn causes more tension & friction etc.

It therefore becomes even more difficult to avoid pitfalls & see through your obstructive patterns, reducing the chances of you doing the right things & making the right decisions. And the more you get in over your head, the more the pressure builds up, the consequences of which can bet quite intens. Because getting overworked & overstrained is often a very painful & confusing experience, which you'd better avoid or deal with quickly.

Recovering from being overworked


Because you can't just go on endlessly & go the extra mile and no matter how strong you are or how much you want to go on, at some point it really is too much. If you don't intervene, the overworkedness can even become so great that your ability is reduced to almost zero and especially if you are used to do a lot & of being able of doing a lot, that can be hard to deal with. And when people are counting on you and/or the stakes are high, you can still try to just keep going.... .

But if you are or become overworked because the pressure, quantity and/or emotional strain is too much, you will have to start doing something about the underlying causes, both within yourself and externally. Otherwise, even after a long vacation or a period at home, you may find that you have not really recovered when confronted with the (work) situation, but that you are still overreacting, vulnerable and/or have little energy, overview, resilience or vigor.

Fortunately, with the right help you can clarify the causes of being overworked, giving you insight & overview & regaining clarity yourself. By gaining practical skills & effective tools you can learn to recognize the patterns, pitfalls & blind spots that cause the pressure & tension. This will help you regain control of the situations & yourself - and truly recover from being overworked.
